Government communication isn’t just about delivering information—it’s about creating connections. Whether drafting social media posts, website updates, or official statements, the right tone can make all the difference in how the public perceives and engages with your message. This session will explore the development process of a voice that is clear, accessible, and aligned with your community’s values. Attendees will gain practical strategies for engaging their community in developing their identity, improving message clarity, shifting tone for different platforms, and ensuring communications resonate with their audience.

This session will include real examples, before-and-after messaging makeovers, and an interactive exercise where attendees rework a piece of government communication to enhance clarity and tone.

Why is this important? A well-crafted message can encourage public trust, increase engagement, and even shape how residents feel about their local government.

    Speaker:
Sarah Haugen is the Communications and Grant Coordinator for the City of West St. Paul. Her focus is on crafting effective messaging and graphics in all print and digital communications, securing grants, and ensuring that the community stays connected and informed.

Before transitioning to the government sector in 2022, Sarah spent 5 years in non-profit communications and development, helping organizations with limited resources amplify their voices and secure vital funding. She also has over 10 years of experience in the service industry, where she developed a passion for customer service excellence and a strong understanding of business operations.

Sarah has a B.A. from Augsburg University, where she majored in Studio Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design and minored in Business Administration.

Fun fact: Sarah once got to sing backup with a group for Barry Manilow at the Xcel Energy Center.

    Key Takeaways for Attendees:

    • Developing the Right Tone - Engaging with your community to develop your identity, and claiming it!
    • Adapting for Different Audiences – Adjusting tone for social media, newsletters, websites, and public statements.
    • Clarity Over Bureaucracy – Techniques for making complex information digestible.
    • Interactive Writing Exercise – A hands-on activity where attendees refine real-world messages.
