Katie Bengtson

Organization

City of Mendota Heights

Current Position and how long

Communications Coordinator since October 2022

Why do you want to be a Minnesota Association of Government Communicators board member?

I was elected to serve on the MAGC Board in 2022 and have truly enjoyed the opportunity to help shape the future of government communications in our state. As a member of this organization for nearly 20 years, I am proud of the work we are doing to provide convenient and affordable professional education opportunities, an outstanding awards program and a variety of unique networking options. This past year, the Board began work on a strategic plan to ensure we are providing value to members for many years to come. If reelected, I would be honored to play a role in continuing that work.

What skills, knowledge or expertise do you bring to the board?

I have more than 24 years of experience in communications, marketing and public relations, and I have come to love the field of government communications over the past 17 years. I have a masters degree in strategic communications from the University of Minnesota, and a bachelors degree in education from St. Cloud State University. I am also accredited by the International Association of Business Communicators, and I am passionate about providing high-quality, engaging and accessible communications.

What else would you like us to know about you as a candidate for the MAGC board?

When I joined the City of Eden Prairie as senior communications coordinator in 2007, a position I enjoyed for more than 14 years, MAGC played an important role in my success. As we see many new professionals joining the field of government communications each year, I believe we have an obligation to invite their greater involvement in this organization, through mentorship opportunities, regional meetups, committee work and more. I would love to take what I learned serving on the Board for the past two years, and champion this effort going forward.
