Carolyn Marinan is the Public Affairs Officer for Hennepin County. She has worked in communications in the county since 1998. Previously Carolyn spent nearly 20 years in television news and promotion at WCCO TV, KSTP TV and KARE 11. She’s done talk radio and produced and hosted a local travel show on TPT. Her numerous awards include a New York Film Festival award, Telly Awards, Best of Gannett and AP. Carolyn serves on the National Association of County Information Officers (NACIO) Board of Directors.
Carolyn graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BA in Speech-Communication. She remains involved with mentoring students at the University of Minnesota along with being active in the Hennepin University Partnership. She lends her time as well to other worthwhile causes in need of communications and public relations.

As Communications Director for the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, Telly serves as the District’s spokesperson and raises public awareness about the District’s work and the importance of water resource protection. She specializes in community, government and media relations, organizes special events and writes for local publications. Prior to joining the MCWD in February of 2011, Telly worked as a broadcast journalist, most recently at WCCO Radio in Minneapolis. She earned a number of awards for her reporting including an American Women in Radio and Television award.

Telly holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and a Masters degree from the University of Minnesota.

John joined Ramsey County as Public Communications Director in July of 2014. Previously, he worked for eight years in the public sector as a Marketing Project Manager and Public Relations Manager at Metro Transit. Before shifting to the public sector, he held management positions in Marketing and Communications at Target, Best Buy and Musicland. The first few of his nearly 20 years as a Communications professional were spent as a writer and editor at Minnesota-based trade magazines and non-profit presses.

John holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Grinnell College and has continued his education by taking public affairs courses from the Humphrey Institute.


Michelle, Fure, secretary

Michelle is the Manager of Public Involvement for the Metropolitan Council, where she oversees outreach, writing, and editing staff. She has been at the Council for 7 years – previously filling the roles of Outreach Coordinator and Senior Outreach Coordinator. Prior to working at the Council, she was a senior communications specialist at the Department of Public Safety, editor/assistant director of the Public Information Services department at the Minnesota House of Representatives, and a news reporter at the Sioux Falls Argus Leader and USA Today.

She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and Latin from the University of Minnesota. Throughout her career, she has been involved in professional organizations – including MAGC – as an officer and volunteer, helping plan training conferences and professional development sessions. She has also been a presenter and panelist.


Ashley Aukes

Ashley Aukes is the Communications Specialist for Region Nine Development Commission located in south central Minnesota. In this role, she uses her expertise in marketing, social media, photography, and design to promote the organization and the development of the region. Through her communications work, Region Nine received the National Association of Development Organizations 2015 Innovation Award for Telling the Regional Government Story Differently. She is passionate about helping small businesses, entrepreneurs, and rural communities improve their online presence. In January 2014 she co-founded Social Media Breakfast in New Ulm, MN. Aukes has also presented at numerous state and national conferences on social media and e-mail marketing.


Erik Juhl

Erik’s duties at City of Bloomington include curating the City’s social media accounts; managing its website’s design, back-end functionality and integration of third-party services; providing editing and software training; copy writing, editing, proofing, graphic design, illustration and photography; strategic planning; and email marketing. Erik’s employee newsletter designs helped Bloomington earn 3CMA awards for 9 consecutive years, including seven Savvy awards.

In his free time, Erik hangs out with is wife and two teenage daughters, teaches woodworking and provides communications assistance to several nonprofit organizations.


Meg Knodl

Meg is a member of the management team for the Center of Innovation and Excellence at Hennepin County, planning events, curating a SharePoint site, and coordinating internal communications for the Center of Innovation and Excellence. Her work and professional interests include continuous improvement, design thinking, and facilitation.

She has a Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from the University of North Texas, a Master of Science in Education (MSEd) from Indiana University, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in French from Indiana University. In her fourteen years of experience at Hennepin County, she has worked as a librarian, a social media manager and as a photographer.


Howie Padilla

Howie is responsible for maintaining, protecting and enhancing Metro Transit's reputation among customers, stakeholders, opinion leaders and the public by providing strategic planning surrounding the release of information primarily to the news media. He serves as the principal voice of Metro Transit in delivering public statements that are accurate, fully researched, balanced, forthright and placed in a context that provides the public, stakeholders and the media with the information they need to properly and positively assess the agency's performance, services and programs.

Howie received a BA in communication from the University of North Dakota in 2000.

Mary Tan

Mary has served as communications coordinator for the City of Brooklyn Park since 2007. Before this, she has worked at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, WAGA-TV in Atlanta, KVBC-TV in Las Vegas, WMTV-TV in Madison and WDIO-TV in Duluth. Mary is past president of the Asian American Journalists Association, member of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Community Advisory Board, vice president of the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communications Alumni Board and member of the City of Buffalo’s Community Center Board.

Mary received a BA in music performance and political science from UW-Madison and a BA in broadcast journalism from U of M-Twin Cities. She guest hosts and reports for “Life to the Max,” a national TV show about people who live life to the fullest despite challenges.
