Our Mission: MAGC members are committed to improving the
two-way flow of communications between the public and the agencies
we represent. We strive to help people access government resources
and understand how our agencies serve the public. We work hard to
maintain open communications, foster strong community relations,
and provide the highest level of public service through effective
communications.
MAGC Structure: As a nonprofit, MAGC is sustained with annual
dues from its members and member agencies. Each year, members elect
a volunteer executive board and president. The board develops annual
programs and special events and manages the organizations
financial affairs, including policies. Most MAGC activities are
financially self-sustaining. All MAGC resources are used to advance
its purpose of promoting effective government communications.
Share and Learn: The potential for sharing and learning within
this group is one of the most beneficial aspects of MAGC membership.
By participating in MAGC events or using its e-mail database, members
can connect with a network of professionals who have specific communications
skills (e.g. marketing, publications, websites, etc.) and are willing
to share their expertise.
Professional Development
Each year, MAGC provides several opportunities for its members to
enhance existing communications skills and keep up-to-date on emerging
trends. Members can often participate for reduced or no fees. Annual
events include:
- The Fall
Conference, which provides a chance to sharpen your skills and
meet your peers
- The spring
Northern Lights competition, which recognizes excellence and innovation
in government communications, and the Northern Lights Banquet,
during which members can see the award-winning work and network
- Lunchtime
workshops and after-work events with guest speakers, which combine
learning, networking and camaraderie
What have
we done lately?
Since
its inception in the 1980's, MAGC has addressed a variety of subjects
and issues critical to government communicators. In addition to
sharing the wealth of knowledge available from our own members,
we've offered the wisdom of many distinguished guests.
Some notable
gatherings in the past few years have covered:
- Tackling
new technology
- Crisis Communications
- Data privacy
and other emerging customer issues
- Risk Communications
with Dr. Vincent Covello
- Stretching
your publications budget
- Online communications
ethics
- Media Relations
- Good writing
for good results with Dr. Stephen Wilbers
