MAGC Fall Conference

There is nothing more important in government communications than connecting with your audience. The 2017 Minnesota Association of Government Communicators Fall Conference will provide strategies for Communications that Connect. From tapping into analytics to explaining complex issues with visual communications (and improvisational comedy!) you are sure to leave the conference with practical tools and fresh ideas.

Conference Schedule:
8:00 – 8:45 Registration/Breakfast/Vendor Fair

8:45 – 9:00 Welcome, MAGC Board Chair Carolyn Marinan

9:00 – 10:15 Improv Session – Unscripted Political Communication, Theater of Public Policy with special guest former Governor Jesse Ventura Communications Director John Wodele

The Theater of Public Policy is Minnesota’s favorite (coincidentally Minnesota’s ONLY) civics-inspired improv comedy company. At live events in Minnesota and across the country, they talk with thought leaders and newsmakers and bring the conversation to life through improvisational comedy theater. It’s been called “The Millennial answer to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert,” and “surprisingly funny,” and “something to do.” Learn more at their website, or connect with them on Twitter or on Facebook.

10:15 – 10:30 Break/Vendor Fair

10:30 – 11:30 A Tool for Connecting: Infographics, Brian Prentice, Padilla; Leah Janz, Metro Transit

It seems that you can find infographics almost everywhere these days.  However, getting the right balance of design and information together can make or break a “good” infographic. Consider this an Infographics-101 course to get started with the basics and heading in the right direction with this visual communication tool.

11:30 – 12:15 Communicating Across Generations, MSG Aaron Meyers, Minnesota Army National Guard

As government communicators, our audience includes citizens across all generations – yet not every generation communicates in the same way. The Minnesota Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion is known as being the best Army National Guard recruiting state in the country over the last fifteen years. This program uses boots-on-the-ground experience and research knowledge from their incredibly talented soldiers in order to acknowledge, adapt to and execute ideas based on the traits and needs of their target market audience.

12:15 – 12:30 Reflecting on Our Past (MAGC History Project), Bob Gibbons

12:30 – 1:00 Lunch

1:00 – 1:30 Vendor Fair

1:30 – 2:30 What’s Your Gravitational Pull?, Jeannette Grace, Expressive!

You almost certainly have qualities that make up your unique gravitational pull. Maybe it’s an uncanny ability to inspire coworkers, not take yourself too seriously, or show appreciation. And unless you are a human anomaly, you have areas that need some work too. The good news is, with focus, some practice, and a little help from this session, you can get rid of the things that block your gravitational pull.

2:30 – 3:00 30 Ideas in 30 Minutes: Visual Enhancements, panel

This MAGC member favorite is back for its third year in a row!  Now a tradition at the Conference, this year’s fast-paced 30 Ideas in 30 Minutes will focus on enriching your communications to not only inform, but also impress.

3:00 – 3:15 Break/Vendor Fair

3:15 – 4:00 Demystifying Analytics, Otto Media Group

So you’ve got all of these new and wonderful ways to communicate to and connect with your audience, but how do you know if they’re working?  Analyzing the impression and influence of what and how you communicate shouldn’t be difficult.  Our final speaker of the day will give you practical advice and best practices on analyzing the impact and effects of your communications.
